White Tail Deer Hunting Tactics

Most seasoned hunters know there are several white tail deer hunting tactics that will greatly increase your results each season. But even the most experienced hunter still makes several mistakes when hunting, mistakes that can make a dramatic difference in the quality and quantity of deer available to you each time you hunt. Everyone wants that opportunity to bag a big time white tail deer, and when you understand how to hunt the rut, you will become much more effective. Here are some key items to keep in mind when hunting during the rut:
1. Calling deer in the rut - During certain phases of the rut, some calls will actually drive deer away from your location and not towards you. Understand what calls work at the right times for best success.
2. Using scent during the rut - Much like calling deer, there are some scents that you should not use during phases of the rut. The scents are more likely to drive bucks away from a location and not into the area you are wanting.
3. Scouting the rut - The most effective way to hunt during the rut is to do your scouting beforehand. Learn the travel patterns by picking a new location each day and scout for a week at a time. Each day, be sure to actually note what you observe, and mark your GPS accordingly.
Doing basic research and understanding how calling and scents can impact your hunting success will make a major difference in your season. Prepare, and you will be rewarded.
Hunting with Dogs
Hunting has been an age old phenomenon among people who like to chase their prey for various reasons. There are many ways of hunting, out of which hunting with dogs is a popular one. Note, however, that hunting whitetail deer with dogs has been banned due to the ill treatment meted out to some of the dogs by their owners.
What can go wrong when using dogs to hunt whitetail deer?
• Dogs work as hard as their human owners when hunting other animals. This involves running at high speed over rough terrain. The potential distance covered during one such chase can be as long as a thousand acres which can cause a lot of fatigue and injury to the dog.
• Owners don't realize the strain that the dog goes through, mentally and physically, and don't take enough counter measures to heal the animals. Many owners shoot their dogs after enough chases to avoid taking care of them and spending money for their treatment in case of injury during one such chase.
• Many a times during hunting chases, dogs have been shot by mistake by hunters or property owners. The latter has happened when a dog lost in chase has entered the premises of a stranger.
What are the conditions imposed for allowing dogs to help during hunting?
There is a minimum area availability required to allow dogs to accompany hunters on a whitetail deer hunt chase. This can be as large as a thousand acres. For this reason many hunters have had to stop using their best friend to help them hunt.
Dogs put in as much hard work while helping their masters hunt whitetail deer as the hunters themselves. Hence, it should be ensured that they receive adequate treatment and care before and after the hunt in order to maintain their health. This includes food, vaccination and exercise.
How Does it Work?
Hunters place themselves at strategic positions and tip off each other regarding the course taken by a deer on the run. The dogs on the approaching end of this run are set off by their owners to chase the animal before they hunt it down.

  2. Whitetail deer also have a very sensitive sense of smell - even the faintest scents can lead them to believe that there is a predator after them, and this will make them flee.
